One of the things that makes the Otherworld experience special are the great people you'll meet there. The participants who attend an event are always a diverse group - often, the only things that everybody has in common are a willingness to try something new and a desire to have a wonderful time.

Our participants come from all different occupations and backgrounds. Just under half are women.

Otherworld Adventure Weekends are open to anyone age 18 or older; 16- and 17-year-olds can attend if accompanied by a parent or if they are college students. In the past, participants have ranged widely in age:

Our oldest-yet participant was sixty-eight years old!

You can choose to attend an Adventure Weekend with family and friends, or you can come by yourself. As a participant, you'll spend a good deal of the weekend with your "adventuring party." Each party is comprised of six people, each of whom is given different abilities so that everyone makes a unique and important contribution to the group.

If you'd like to come with five friends, you can be a party together. If you come with fewer people, we'll place you in a party we think you'll enjoy. For many participants, coming with people they already know is a terrific way to get even closer. We've had people attend with their siblings and their parents. One party was made up of old college friends who used the event as a mini-reunion. One of them later wrote: "For years, we'd been saying 'Hey, remember that cool thing we once did?' Now we have a whole new set of cool memories - I bet we'll be talking about this for the next 10 years!"

"[A staff volunteer who was portraying an elderly warrior-priest] needed to be protected from the outlaws who were all around us and he turned to me and he said "You can do it." And I said "No, I really can't." And he said "Yes, you can." And guess what? I did!"

Although there are plenty of reasons to come with friends, there can also be strong incentive to attend alone. An Otherworld Adventure Weekend gives you a chance to do things you've never done before and to find out more about yourself. For lots of people, that's easier to do when not surrounded by people who already know you.

And you don't have to worry about being lonely. An Otherworld weekend is an intense enough experience that parties bond quickly into cohesive units. We know lots of participants who still stay in touch with their party-mates. Even if you're with five people you've never met before, they won't feel like strangers for long.

Of course, your party isn't the only group of participants. There are normally eight parties at each weekend. Although you'll see them all during the weekend, and will probably find it advantageous to cooperate with them at times, there won't ever be a time when you'll be competing against them. We find that this makes for a friendlier experience for everybody.

We can't discuss the people of Otherworld without mentioning the wonderful staff volunteers who make the weekend happen. Although we can't introduce you to every one of these 50 hard-working volunteers, we invite you to read a few staff profiles to meet just a few of them!
